Chapter Seventeen

There were people everywhere by the time Mia and Tyree arrived at the house. They got out of their car and found Whitney on the lawn with Cassandra and Rick. They were all looking at the front door that was wide open, with people coming in and out. As they approached, Mia slid her hand into Tyree’s, and he held it tightly. Cassandra was the first to notice them, and she turned, throwing her arms around Mia.

“What happened?” Mia asked through the tight embrace Cassandra had her wrapped in.

“Whitney came downstairs and caught the end of the fight. The bastard ran out when she showed up. He beat him so severely he is hardly recognizable.”

“Who would do this to Jude? He doesn’t have any enemies. He isn’t even from here.” Mia sniffled. “I can’t believe this.”

Rick walked around to stand next to his sister and wrapped his arms around her. “They think it was an attempted home invasion.”

“Did they take anything?”

“No,” Whitney said in a shaky tone. “And I think we all know what happened here. When people die around us, we know who did it. The same bastard who always does it!” Whitney walked over and sat in her father’s car while the rest just stood quietly. There was an awkward silence among them until Tyree finally spoke up.

“You don’t think . . . I mean, it’s possible, but what would he have to gain from killing Jude? If he was going to go after anyone, let’s face it, it would be one of us standing here. Jude wasn’t a threat.”

“Whitney is,” Cassandra said quietly. “This probably wasn’t about Jude. I think he may have taken the beating meant for my daughter. She’s a part of this world now, and she is a target for Richmond. He wants us all dead because we took everything from him. He wants his whole family eradicated.”

Things were awkwardly quiet among them for the next few minutes, and Mia stood there until she felt she needed a break. “I’m sorry, you guys. I need some time to myself.” She backed away, and Tyree followed her.

“You okay?”

“No, Ty, I’m not okay. That boy was good and decent. Just this morning he was at our breakfast table worried about us. He had his whole life to live, and just like that, he’s gone. He was disposable to whoever did this. It was like his life didn’t even matter.”

“He mattered. We all loved him.”

“Did we, or did we get him killed? If he weren’t here, he would still be alive. I don’t know if you can live with that, but we promised that boy’s parents he would be okay. We promised to take him under our wing, to be there for him.”

She trembled with each word. “Why do we even try? Our families are destined to be unhappy. We will never have peace.”

“Kitten, you can’t—”

“Can’t what? Blame myself? Well, it’s too late for that. I knew us getting comfortable was a bad idea. We will never be happy.
